There were more than 500 newborns each named Liam and Olivia last year, making them the most popular baby names in 2016, according to the state Department of Health.

This is the second consecutive year that Liam — a gaelic version of William — tops Jersey's list. Olivia, Latin for olive tree, went from second in 2015 to first last year.

Both Liam and Olivia were tied for second most popular in the nation, according to the Social Security Administration.

Noah and Emma were the nation's top picks in 2016.

The vast majority of parents in New Jersey break from the pack and make a less trendy choice. Out of the 100,000 or so babies born in the state every year, about 15,000 share in the 20 most often used names.
