weight loss pills: study finds & # 39; unique pill & # 39; Could help British shed TWO stone | Diets Life & Style

A study revealed at the world's largest obesity conference showed a pill containing a balloon, an effective alternative to weight loss surgery.

Experts urge the NHS to now look at the funding of pills for British, with one out of four people in the UK is obese.

Once the pill is swallowed, the balloon swells in the stomach when it is filled with water.

This then limits the amount of calories a person can eat.

The study of 42 adults found that they lost two stone and six pounds on average after four months.

The pill, referred to as "stomach tape in a tablet", is licensed for use, but it is still available on the NHS.

In private ownership, it costs about £ 3,000, which is half the price of stomach stapling.

Researchers from the University of Rome who conducted the study said that balloon technology could be widespread and bring "significant cost savings" to long-term health services.

The research presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Porto found patients who received the one pill lost an average of 36 pounds - more than 14 percent of their total body weight.

They also saw significant improvements in their health including blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood glucose levels.

The pill is attached to a thin tube, which allows the balloon to be filled with water after reaching the stomach.

Experts said the counseling was necessary to ensure that the patients held the weight after the empty balloon passed through the body.
