It is encouraging to see, however, that governments in recent years have had the political will to focus on health care. The government's health initiative, the National Rural Health Mission (NHM) has seen India drastically reduce infant, child and maternal mortality and an increase in life expectancy.

Polio and maternal and neonatal tetanus have been eliminated through the implementation of innovative programs and policies. A critical intervention in the elimination of the disease was vaccination.

The Universal Government Immunization Program (UIP) provides routine immunizations to all children free of charge. Those that cover more than 27 million infants, 100 million children between the ages of 1-5 years and 30 million pregnant women each year, this is the largest of its kind in the world.

In recent years, the Government has shown a great commitment to vaccination by introducing the Indradhanush Mission, aimed at strengthening the main functional areas of vaccination and increasing the total immunization coverage of the vaccine. India to at least 90 percent by 2020. A high order, given the current coverage rate of 62 percent.
