Tomato extract fights stomach cancer, mature for further study - ScienceDaily

A new study shows that tomato extracts Whole from two different cultivars of southern Italy inhibit the growth of gastric cancer cells and malignant characteristics, means future studies aimed at implementing lifestyle habits not only for prevention but potentially As a support for conventional therapies.

"Their antitumor effect does not appear to be linked to specific components, such as lycopene, but rather suggests that tomatoes be considered in their entirety," says Daniela Barone, a researcher at the Mercogliano Oncology Research Center (CROM) And one of the authors of the study.

Experiments analyzed whole lipophilic tomato extracts for their ability to attack various neoplastic features of gastric cancer cell lines. The extracts of tomato varieties San Marzano and Corbarino have been able to inhibit the growth and cloning behavior of malignant cells. Treatment with whole tomato extracts affected key processes in cells that impede their ability to migrate, stopping the cell cycle through the modulation of proteins in the retinoblastoma family and specific inhibitors Of the cell cycle and, ultimately, induce the death of cancer cells by apoptosis.

The study, published in Journal of Cellular Physiology describes the discoveries of Daniela Barone and Letizia Cito, of the research group led by Professor Antonio Giordano at the National Cancer Institute of Naples Pascale Foundation , CROM.

"Our findings further evaluate the potential use of specific nutrients not only as part of cancer prevention, but also as a supportive strategy with conventional therapies," says Professor Antonio Giordano, director of the Sbarro Institute for Molecular Medicine, Temple University and professor of pathology and oncology at the University of Siena, Italy.

"Distinct species can exert different effects, at different stages of a certain neoplasm," adds Barone.

Gastric cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer in the world and has been associated with genetic causes, Helicobacter pylori and eating habits such as smoked and salted food consumption.

Tomatoes are consumed all over the world and are a basic component of the Mediterranean diet, which is generally considered a lower cancer risk. Different components of the tomato were also analyzed for their ability to counteract tumor growth in experimental systems, although few studies analyzed the effects of tomatoes in their entirety.

The authors of the study worked in collaboration with researchers from Prof. Barbara Nicolaus and Dr. Rocco De Prisco at the National Research Council of Pozzuoli, Italy.

"This work comes from the SHRO research program realized through a long-standing collaboration with the Department of Medicine, Surgery and Neurosciences of the University of Siena and the Institut Pascale, Mercogliano CROM. In the light of these results, Dr Attilio Bianchi, Director General of the Pascale Institute and CROM, and I joined forces to renew the collaboration with SHRO implementing nutrigenomic studies for the benefit of patients with cancer " , Concludes Giordano.
