New Delhi: Ladies! You may need to monitor your alcohol intake if you want to avoid your risk of breast cancer.
A study found an association between alcohol and breast cancer, saying that women who drink seven or more glasses a week have an increased risk of breast cancer.
The results showed that women who drank 14 times or more of alcoholic beverages per week were 33% more likely to develop breast cancer than women who consumed four or fewer drinks per week.
Previous studies have already established alcohol as a risk factor for breast cancer, but most of these studies have been conducted in predominantly white populations.
Researchers from the University of North Carolina in the United States wanted to discern whether alcohol increases the risk for African American women by evaluating participants in a large study that only enrolled women Afro-American.
The team enrolled 22,338 women from the African Americas Breast Cancer Epidemiology and Breast Cancer Consortium (AMBER), which brings together four major epidemiological studies on breast cancer. Participants reported their drinking by a questionnaire.
Study researcher Melissa A Troester said that black women drink less alcohol than white women, with previous research suggesting various reasons for religious restrictions to sanitary restrictions. Troester added that a limitation of the study was that it was a relatively small number of women who drank a lot, making these results less significant on the Statistical plan.
However, she stated that the results of this study are consistent with previous research indicating an increased risk for the highest levels of alcohol consumption.
The study appeared in the Journal of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
