A call was launched to re-examine 400 patients treated by a doctor who was then diagnosed with HIV.

NHS officials said the locum was used in three hospital trusts between June 2010 and February 2015.

It was the hospitals of the University of Nottingham , The NHS Trust, the Royal Chesterfield Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.

While pointing out that the risk is low, letters offering tests were sent to identified patients.

The largest number of patients is 223 in Nottingham. There were 120 in Chesterfield and 57 in Cornwall.

Doctor suspended

Dr. Stephen Fowlie, medical director in Nottingham, said: "Transmission of the virus between an infected health professional and a patient with an open wound can occur Than if the health workers themselves bleed when they provide care to patients.

"There is no evidence that this happens to this physician in contact with a patient. Patient

He added that, as well as clinical appointments, patients will receive test results within 24 hours and support and advice from specialists for them and their families.

Officials pointed out that HIV could not be transmitted through daily contact and, if HIV-positive staff can work with patients, there were strict conditions in place.

The NHS said it would not name the physician involved but confirmed that they were no longer working for the NHS.

After being referred to the GMC, the doctor had conditions placed on his registration, but was suspended earlier this year. An investigation into their actions is underway.
